Tour of the Jewish East End

A personalised tour for the Belsize Members Group led by Blue Badge guide Valerie Sussman. Meeting at Aldgate station, the tour will follow the chronology of the arrival and settlement of the Jews in England from when they were brought here by William the Conqueror in the 1070s. Stops include:

  • Bevis Marks Synagogue, the beautiful Sephardic synagogue which dates from 1701.
  • The East End, Petticoat Lane and Whitechapel – where 100.000 Jews settled from the 1880s after fleeing the pogroms of Eastern Europe
  • The tiny and beautiful Sandy’s Row Synagogue, the oldest Ashkenazi community in the country
  • Lunch stop:the vibrant Spitalfields Market where there is a wide choice of bars, cafes and restaurants
  • The beautiful homes of the French Huguenot area around Founier Street, where there is much Jewish interest from the late 19th century period.
  • Cable Street and its astonishing mural  which vividly portrays the 20th century battle between the east enders and the fascist Oswald Mosley and his black shirt thugs.
